A working farm in south Shropshire. Eight minutes from Ludlow. Five bedrooms, sleeps twelve.

Lower Wood Farmhouse sits at the end of its own half-mile drive in south Shropshire. The nearest neighbour is the gatehouse at the start of it, so the house and the four acres around it are completely private. Cattle graze the neighbouring fields, hens roam the run, ducks drift across the pond, with Clee Hill on the horizon. Red kites wheel overhead. The house is period stone, restored inside to pair authentic character with proper comfort.

The Working Farm

A working cattle farm.

Around two hundred head of cattle and sheep graze the surrounding fields. They are not for show.

The working cattle farm sits directly behind the house. Hens on the yard supply the breakfast eggs. Ducks drift across the pond. Red kites wheel overhead; pheasant and partridge break from the hedgerows; hares and rabbits pass within view of the windows. To the rear, a sheltered courtyard, a greenhouse and a private allotment, all open to guests. Pot up a few seedlings or pick something for dinner. Pheasant shoot days run October through February. Five stables and a two-acre paddock are available for guests bringing their own horses. By arrangement.

The Kitchen

An electric AGA. No summer heat.

A modern electric conversion of the blue AGA. Cooks like the original, cleaner to run and stays cool when July arrives.

The kitchen runs around the AGA and a long dining table, opening onto the terrace. A separate utility kitchen takes the overflow, with a Sage espresso machine, a Dualit toaster and a full-size American fridge-freezer. A front sitting room with an original brick inglenook fireplace handles the quieter evenings. Ludlow Food Centre is eight minutes from the gate, with the town's butchers and bakers a few minutes further. Most arrivals stop on the way in.

Most parties take the four upstairs doubles plus the bunk room for the kids, with the sofa beds in reserve for overflow.

The original brick inglenook of the period farmhouse, with the bread baking kiln set into the chimney breast beside it. Largely as it was four hundred years ago, and now genuinely rare. Beam-ceilinged, soft sofas, the room that earns its keep from October through March.

Lower Wood Farmhouse is run by Harry, who has been letting houses since 2017. The neighbouring land is a working farm, and the cattle in the field behind the house belong to it. We live close by, on 01584 534514 or WhatsApp at almost any hour. Present, not in the way. Buffy and Lola, our Pomeranians, are usually underfoot.
